Sam Penn: Some Girls

Sam Penn's first publication, Some Girls, features portraits of women she loves, her girls. The photos are inherently social, captured with an intimacy and immediacy only possible through Penn's relationships to her subjects. Taken on the beach, en route to the club, at the club, or in bed the next morning, these pictures find a way to freeze the constant movement of these New York girls.

 

Sam Penn (b. 1998, Oklahoma City, OK) is a photographer based in New York City. Penn's work was the subject of a solo exhibition at New York Life Gallery, New York, NY (2025), and Balice Hertling Galerie, Paris, France (2024). Penn has participated in group exhibitions at James Fuentes, New York, NY (2025); OCDChinatown, New York, NY (2024, 2023); and New York Life Gallery, NY (2024). In conjunction with Sam Penn's 2025 exhibition, Max, New York Life Gallery published Penn's third publication, co-authored with the eponymous subject, Max Battle. Penn's second zine, Bad Behavior, was published by New York Life Gallery in 2024 to coincide with the artist's solo exhibition at Galerie Balice Hertling in Paris. Sam Penn's first publication, Some Girls, was published by New York Life Gallery in 2023. Penn's work is included in the permanent collection of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art.
