The 26 charcoal illustrations published in Luke Hannam are exemplary of the artist’s daily drawing practice. Hannam is interested in working intuitively and experimentally, often returning to similar compositions and motifs—primarily portraits, animals, still lifes—while allowing each iteration to develop its own character. His background in music has significantly influenced his approach to drawing and painting, particularly the energy, rhythm, and instinctive quality of his mark-making. Hannam often makes his drawings on two sheets of paper adhered together to create a seam through the middle of the composition. This deliberate part of his process reflects the artist’s attraction to beginning with something imperfect, and interest in the individuality of his subjects, allowing their particularities to come through rather than working toward a uniform or idealized image.
Luke Hannam (b. 1966, Oxfordshire, UK) lives and works in East Sussex, UK. Hannam studied at Chesterfield College of Art and Canterbury College of Art. He has had solo exhibitions at The Ruffed Grouse Gallery, Narrowsburg, NY (2024); 8 Holland Street, London, UK (2024); and Anima Mundi, St Ives, UK (2023, 2021). He has participated in group exhibitions at the Saatchi Gallery, London, UK (2024, 2022); 8 Holland Street, London, UK (2024); Kravitz Contemporary, London, UK (2024); and Anima Mundi, St Ives, UK (2021–23).
