In conjunction with Sam Penn's exhibition, Max, New York Life Gallery publishes Penn's third publication, co-authored with the eponymous subject, Max Battle. The images center Penn's collaboration with this singular subject, using trust to expose the entanglement between her private sexual life and her photographic practice. The publication features a text by Battle, interwoven with the photographs, that gives interiority and narrative to the subject through a series of thirteen vignettes.

 

Sam Penn (b. 1998, Oklahoma City, OK) is a photographer based in New York City. Penn's work was the subject of a solo exhibition at New York Life Gallery, New York, NY (2025), and Balice Hertling Galerie, Paris, France (2024). Penn has participated in group exhibitions at James Fuentes, New York, NY (2025); OCDChinatown, New York, NY (2024, 2023); and New York Life Gallery, NY (2024). In conjunction with Sam Penn's 2025 exhibition, Max, New York Life Gallery published Penn's third publication, co-authored with the eponymous subject, Max Battle. Penn's second zine, Bad Behavior, was published by New York Life Gallery in 2024 to coincide with the artist's solo exhibition at Galerie Balice Hertling in Paris. Sam Penn's first publication, Some Girls, was published by New York Life Gallery in 2023. Penn's work is included in the permanent collection of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art.
