Screening: Pecker (1998)

April 24, 2024
Please join us on April 24th at 8pm for a screening of Pecker (1998) written and directed by John Waters. The film charts the meteoric rise of its adolescent titular character, Pecker, a fry-cook-cum-street-photographer who is catapulted to art stardom when a New York dealer discovers his work. Dubbed a ‘teenage Weegee’ by the critics, his grainy, unflinching photographs capture the grit and humor of his community in Baltimore, with titles like Rats Making Love and Mom Helps Miss Betty into Used Girdle. Written with his signature wit and ribaldry, Waters’ film is at once a love letter to his hometown and a send up of the New York art galleries that poach its aspiring artists. With Edward Furlong as Pecker and Christina Ricci as his muse, the cast also features cameos from Waters’ regular cast of Dreamlanders (Mink Stole, Mary Vivian Pearce, Patty Hearst, and co.) and photographers like Cindy Sherman.

The event is free and open to the public.
