Screening: Eyes of Laura Mars (1978)

March 21, 2024
Please join us on March 21st at 8pm for a screening of "The Eyes of Laura Mars" (1978), directed by Irvin Kershner and adapted from a script by John Carpenter. This American spin on the giallo film stars Faye Dunaway as the eponymous fashion photographer and art world provocateuse as she directs her models in explicitly violent and sexual scenes. A police lieutenant, played by Tommy Lee Jones, discovers Laura Mars' photographs bear an uncanny resemblance to unpublished crime scene photos from an ongoing investigation of a serial killer, making her a person of interest. Drawing inspiration from contemporary art and fashion of the time, Mars’ photographs were shot by Helmut Newton and many of her models were played by 1970s New York supermodels, like Vogue covergirl Lisa Taylor. With dialogue about feminism, the link between art and commerce, and the proliferation of photography as a fine art, this film is a sexy ode to the transgressive power of photography and fashion with a heavy dose of slasher film tropes.
