Director

New York Life Gallery is seeking an experienced Director to lead the gallery’s sales strategy and collaborate closely with our small, dynamic team to expand the gallery’s reach and programming. This position requires a results-driven sales professional with strong writing and communication skills, a solid understanding of the art market and art history, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The role requires a flexible team player who can seamlessly adapt to varying responsibilities as projects arise. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and eager to play a central role in the gallery’s next phase of growth.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement sales strategies for exhibitions, art fairs, and special projects.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with collectors, advisors, curators, and other industry contacts.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all sales inquiries.
  • Represent the gallery at openings, fairs, and related events.
  • Draft press releases, exhibition texts, and other communications.
  • Maintain accurate client records and interest lists in the gallery database.
  • Manage invoicing and organize monthly accounting records for the gallery’s bookkeeper.
  • Monitor trends and pricing in both the primary and secondary art markets.
  • Assist with the production of exhibitions, art fairs, and publications.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a sales-related role within the contemporary art industry.
  • Proven success in executing sales strategies and cultivating long-term client relationships.
  • Established network of contacts across the art world.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with a deep understanding of contemporary art and art history.
  • Experience using an inventory database such as Artlogic or a similar platform.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Art History, or Arts Administration.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace.
  • Familiarity with platforms such as Artsy and Arternal.


Schedule and Benefits

  • Full-time position: Tuesday–Saturday, 9:30 am–6:30 pm (Monday–Friday between exhibitions).
  • Some evenings and weekends are required for openings, fairs, and events.
  • Salary range: $70,000–$80,000, commensurate with experience, plus commission.
  • Health insurance provided after a one-month trial period.
  • Four weeks of paid vacation, plus paid time off between Christmas and New Year’s.
  • 401(k) plan.
