Joseph Solman (b. 1909, Vitebsk, RU [now Belarus]; d. 2008, New York, NY) was an American painter based in New York. Solman studied at the National Academy of Design and was a founding member of The Ten, a group of New York Expressionist painters formed in 1935. He worked in the easel division of the WPA Federal Art Project from 1935–41. In 1949, the Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, presented a retrospective of his work. Throughout his career, Solman exhibited extensively at A.C.A. Gallery, New York, NY; Mercury Gallery, Boston, MA; Robert Brown Gallery, Washington, DC; and Eleonore Austerer Gallery, San Francisco, CA. His work is held in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA; Phillips Collection, Washington, DC, among others.
