George Platt Lynes (1907, East Orange, NJ – 1955, New York, NY) was a photographer who documented 1940s intelligentsia, with special attention paid to gay artists and writers. Originally considering a career as a writer, his photography career began with photographing his friends in the New York literati to display in his New Jersey bookstore. In addition to his work documenting friends, he shot for magazines like Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue, including a cover story with Lisa Fonssagrives, known by many as the first supermodel. Lynes’ works are in the permanent collections at the Guggenheim Museum, NY; Art Institute of Chicago, IL; Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA; Centre Pompidou, FR; National Portrait Gallery, Washington, DC; and National Gallery of Canada, CN.
